Are We Who We Are Online?
How does one look beyond a public persona?
I am not a person who is in the public eye at all, thank God. But, still, anytime someone sees me outside of my home, I am "in public". So, what does a person see and determine about me by simply seeing me? or watching me? What impression does a person get by reading my blog? Seeing me work? Watching me with friends? Observing me at church? Walmart? The bank?
One thing about these "public forums" and such things in the "age of information" and/or "communication" is that we, people in general, basically communicate only tiny tidbits of information through pixels on an LCD screen. These "writings" convey little about the character/personality of the writer, although some writers do reveal deep personal thoughts and/or feelings, it isn't the whole story. Often in today's world we conclude what a person is like through a few Instant Messages, comments on a forum, and/or a blog post. These things are minimal and
in no way encompass the entire being of a person. I wish we would remember that.
It is hard enough sometimes to understand a person we have been acquainted with for years, so why do we feel like we can know "who" a person is by a few simple writings. Writings in pixels...NOT handwriting, where you can sometimes see the intensity or gentleness of a certain stroke that may reveal a degree of accuracy in portraying a real thought or emotion. We can't detect inflection or the tone of a voice through pixels, like we can when actually speaking to people. We can't see facial expressions through pixels.
A carefully crafted word or punctuation does have power. Power to offend, to hurt, to encourage, to inspire. Words typed and displayed on a screen can reveal things about a person, but it is limited. What we read is not WHO that person is. We shouldn't jump to conclusions and assume we know a person when we have had very limited engagement with them.
I'm sometimes amazed at how much we miscommunicate in this era of communication.

Things aren't always as they seem.

About Ma
On a Merry-go-round is a blog I have been following lately. Donna writes about everyday observations of life and often can bring to the surface things that a person can easily overlook and dismiss without much thought. Her style of writing sometimes requires more than one read through because she packs many thoughts into a small space, but usually they can put a smile on my face.
One of her recent posts, Laughter, bettern' snuff, sparked some comments from me about my sister and my mom. I want to share about my mom here. In a comment reply Donna said "You want to know how to get to know things about someone right away? Ask questions of the person about his or her mother...". I had to reply with this: (and it's not even Mother's Day!)
When I grow up I want to be like my mom.
She always tells me everything will be okay. She has always told me this, and she has always been right. She has this quality about her that makes all my friends want to call her when they are down because she can just make you feel better no matter what. It's a gift.
She has patience like I can only imagine having.
She beat cancer, not once, but twice, and really never let us see her sweat. I was way more a wimp through that ordeal! She has more strength and fortitude than some of the Olympians people have been admiring this week.
She loves to laugh and to give me big hugs.
She sacrifices so much time and effort for other people it is amazing. She housesits, dog sits, babysits, and even went once a week to a jail visit a friend who was wrongly accused and falsely imprisoned for a year. She visited my grandmother, her mother in law, daily for years until her death. She loves as unconditionally as any human can.
Yes, when I grow up I want to be like my mom.
I hope I get home to visit her soon. I miss my mom.
We will laugh!
I really hope that I have learned and aquired some of the character of my mom. She is a beacon of optimism (well, I don't so much have that going on), has a natural love for people (I think I have some of that) and has a servant's heart (I can do this, but there is room for improvement). She is one of the hardest working people I know, and that is AFTER retirement! (I have a good work ethic as well, so I guess I have learned in some ways to be like mom!)
I am so blessed and can not fathom why God gave me the mom and dad He did! He's just showing He loves me! It bloggles the mind!

New Blog
Yes, believe it or not, it's me, Katie! I am still alive! Sorry for not posting much these days. I've been very busy with work and school...throw a little romance in there and you have a recipe for chaos! I love it! God is moving in so many ways and life is very exciting. I have a new job working in ministry...FINALLY! I'm doing what I love...serving God through ministry and earning an income at the same time. Unfortunately, it doesn't leave much time for writing. However, one of my recent assignments from school has birthed a new blog and I would love for you to drop by. It's still in the early stages but I'm sure it will grow in time. So, I'll leave you with a link and I hope you will stop by for a visit!

Blogging Without Letters
September 8th came and went virtually unnoticed, although I did mention to Katie that September 8 marked the 5th blogiversary of Sisters' Weblog: It Bloggles the Mind!
So, yay, Happy Blogday to us.
My computer is one year younger, but it is showing wear. Wonder how many blogs it takes to wear off ALL the letters on the keyboard?
Oh, and it looks like it may be time again for another run through the dishwasher...amazing how the camera's flash finds all the crud in the keyboard. I made the pic B&W and small so as to keep the gross factor low. LOL

Christian Blogosphere

Speaking of The Blogosphere...Katie and I were recently featured on the local news because of this blog, Sisters' Weblog: It Bloggles the Mind! (For more info, see "Did You See Us On TV?")

Today a customer at work, whom I did not know, recognized me from the news spot. I thought that was cool! No paparazzi yet though! LOL

How To Block MySpace Profile Songs
Thank you Andy Skelton! I don't know why I didn't search for a solution before now, but thanks to Andy Skelton I found out How to block MySpace profile songs. YAY!
Supposedly when editing a MySpace account, you can turn "off" the function that allows music to play on sites you visit. That hasn't worked for me, but there's a lot of things on MySpace that don't work for me...like importing address books, (but that's another story).
Andy Skelton's solution has worked:
Why do I hate music on sites while I am surfing?
It's not hard say something like "Hey, I found a really neat new band. There music sounds like this and that. I like how the lead singer evokes an emotional response by the way he delivers a phrase, blah blah blah." Then give the reader the OPTION to listen. DON'T FORCE ME TO!
Truth is, when I come across music on a site, I leave immediately when it starts to play. Because you have music playing, I never read what you blogged about. Wonder how many great blogs go unread because the music you make us endure forced a large majority of us away from your page?

Did You See Us On TV?
Hey! Thanks for dropping by the Sisters' Weblog! It seems we have a few new visitors since we made our television debut tonight! Whew! I was nervous a bit about how our hour and a half interview would come together into a two minute segment on the news, but I think it turned out well.

Here's a pic of what we looked like on tv. I'm hoping to get the actual video of it to post, because they actually included some of the parts where I talked about Ganns, my friend in the Phillipines, and the atheist that we communicated with a few years ago about matters of faith. I tried to take a video with my camera of the tv, but that doesn't work out so well...you get all those black lines that float throughout the frame. What is that anyway? Half the time we looked like talking torsos. LOL
There was only one thing that was reported in error, and that was the part where the reporter said I, Sue, was from Kansas. I am not from Kansas. I have never been to Kansas. My sister lived in Kansas for a short while, like 6 months, but he wouldn't have known that, and it really has nothing to do with me. Anyway, Katie and I figured out why the error happened. After the "shoot" two weeks ago, we were talking with Brad Douglass and the camerawoman about our story and mentioned how we met on the Internet. We gave them a quick rundown of some of the interesting things that happened to bring me to TN and they said "Wow! See! All the really interesting stuff comes AFTER the interviews!" So, I think they tried to recall what we said and got most of it right, just not the Kansas part.
I actually moved here from Iowa, although my home is Ohio.
Oh, you can read that interesting story about how we met and became friends by clicking HERE. Yeah, we posted the interview my dog Whyzer did one day about how Katie and I became friends. (Yep, you read that right!) You can find out even more about us by looking in the menu on the right under each of our names and then click "take a closer look" and that will open a menu and you can follow the links to various bio pages and other sites.
What you will find on the pages of Sisters' Weblog: It Bloggles the Mind! are many things. We share about day to day things, sometimes just the silly things that we do or we might share about spiritual lessons we have learned or are in the process of learning. We want to glorify God by using this blog as a vehicle to share our faith in Christ, that is our main goal. We can be theologically deep at times, and just plain silly in other moments...but that is because we only try to be who God created us to be. God loves the sound of our laughter and holds our hearts in the palm of His hand when we hurt. He is the reason we are friends, and to Him be the glory!

Sisters' Weblog Featured on TV
Living with Katie sure has it's exciting moments! (Exciting is not always a good thing...but today it was!) Today, WBBJ, the local ABC affliliate is here at the house interviewing us about a special series they are doing on blogging. "The Blogosphere" 
is a series that will run on Tuesdays, starting tomorrow (April 24) through May. It should be really fun! Tune in to WBBJ on May 8th to see US! (If you are an early riser and miss the show at 10pm on the 8th, you can catch the segment again on Wednesday, May 9th at 5:30 am.)
I have to admit, it is pretty rough trying to blog with a GIANT camera in your face! LOL
AAAAUUUGGGHHHH!! The pressure!
Right now as I type, they are going for the sound of the typing on the keyboard. This is very interesting! All this recording for probably 2 minutes of material.
Next, Katie will be up to be interviewed and I'm sure she will have A LOT to say! (She always has A LOT to say!) LOL
Well, hmmmmm....not sure what I'm to be doing now. There is a camera pointed at me and I'm supposed to keep typing as though I am blogging for real. I am blogging for real! LOL
(A little later after Katie's interview we had to do a "fake" blog together...what you are reading right now is this "fake" blog)
We told them how we share our faith and everything else that goes on in our lives on our blog. We consider this series "The Blogosphere" on the news, and our inclusion in it a God thing....another opportunity to spread the Word and could possibly drive more traffic to the Sisters' Weblog, to glorify God even more!
Dreaming Big....Katie's recent retreat was all about God's desire to dream big for us, His children. Katie didn't understand the "dream big" part, but now that the Sisters' Weblog is an "Award Winning Tennessee Blog" and is being featured on local television...well, hey, that's pretty big. Not like earth shattering big, but big enough!

McDonald's WIFI
I have found that when you accidently uninstall your modem, and you are waiting for a new installation disk and drivers to arrive in the mail, that McDonald's WIFI is sufficient for an Internet fix.
I've tried downloading the drivers on katie's laptop and transferring to my desktop, but that hasn't worked to correct my problem.
So here I sit in McDonald's parking lot blogging.
There are some pretty interesting characters going in and out of Mickey D's tonight.
Have you ever sat in the parking lot of a fast food joint?
It's gonna be a loooooooong weekend without my Internet connection. I've even thought about volunteering to work someone's shift so I don't have to sit at home and attempt to do something constructive. LOL

Soul Sisters

Sally Miller and Cheri Mueller share about their spiritual journey as "soul sisters". Katie and I could've written this! Great stuff!
If you are wondering why we call this "Sisters' Weblog: It Bloggles the Mind!" well, first we are "soul sisters" like this article talks about. Second, it's a weblog that we've kept since September 2002. We use it to share about our lives in it. Sometimes it is just the silly things we do that boggle the mind, errrr, bloggle the mind, or we share about the mind boggling, errrrr, bloggling things that God is doing in our lives.

Can't Anything Be Simple?
The new Blogger upgrade has the nice feature of "labels" now which allows Blogger bloggers to categorize posts. (See "Labels" in menu at right) However, as with the rollout of any upgrade, here come the bugs.
Blogger now tries to create new "post pages" for every single one of my posts for the last 4 years...that's a LOT of posts. It's taking my FTP allotment and I don't like it! I'm not the only one having this issue either and I'm hoping for a fix soon!
I actually just posted this to see what is going to happen with the little "hack" job I did on my server.

Blogger Beta Permalinks
Hmmmm...anyone else having trouble with permalinks in Blogger Beta? For some reason my permalinks have the post # doubled in the permalink addy. Weird. Some archived posts do not have that problem, but the ones posted in Blogger Beta (or I guess it's out of Beta now) the new Blogger are not posting correctly. It's very irritating.

Well, I fixed this issue by removing some code in the template. You know, I like when Blogger upgrades, but everytime something like this is upgraded, there is a snowball effect. Fixing one thing, leads to needing to fix another and leads to other unforseen issues. Now Blogger doesn't publish my entire blog anymore...it seems to get hung up somewhere so if I have a major template update, I have to manually go in for some months and fix it. I don't know if it just isn't connecting to my server or what the problem is. Oh well, it gives me something to obsess with.

Blogrolling is Down
Panic!
My blogrolls have been down. I don't know for how long, but I first noticed it when I went to visit some of my favorite blogs late this afternoon, and the rolls all came up blank. Boo!
So I went to blogrolling.com and was taken to a Tucows site with nothing there about Blogrolling. I started to consider the possibility that my rolls were forever gone. Vanished into cyberspace! POOF! This would not be a good thing! I never realized how dependent on my blogrolls I am!
Then I found my way to http://news.blogrolling.com/ where I saw:

My blogrolls have been down. I don't know for how long, but I first noticed it when I went to visit some of my favorite blogs late this afternoon, and the rolls all came up blank. Boo!
So I went to blogrolling.com and was taken to a Tucows site with nothing there about Blogrolling. I started to consider the possibility that my rolls were forever gone. Vanished into cyberspace! POOF! This would not be a good thing! I never realized how dependent on my blogrolls I am!
Then I found my way to http://news.blogrolling.com/ where I saw:
Please note that blogrolling.com is curerntly down for maintenance reasons. We have been experiencing technical issues with the database and have to take down the entire service in order to repair the problem in a quick fashion.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

I take some relief from that.

The Factors that Determine Battle of the Blogs Winners
Now for the results you have all been waiting for.
*cough* Well, *ahem*, the results you, one brave reader, have been waiting for:
The biggest factors that decide winners are that a blog has interesting and engaging content and that it looks good. Content slightly edges out layout in importance, which is encouraging, but the whole "look" thing explains why I lose battles. I don't have a fancy layout. The sister's have a plain template, because I LIKE PLAIN! I am plain! I like plain! I like my burgers PLAIN! I like my chicken nuggets without any sauce, in other words, PLAIN! Less is more!
Then, as indicated by recent polls, it is interesting to note that some people will always vote FOR specific blogs and AGAINST other blogs. What happens if there are two blogs battling each other that you have always voted AGAINST? I must admit, there are some blogs that I always vote against too, and they are usually blogs that I find offensive. My bet is that there are some people who will always vote against Christian blogs because they can be equally "offensive" to some.
People tend to favor blogs that convey an optimistic and positive tone. That is encouraging! So, then, why do I see so many blogs that are definitely NOT optimistic and in fact, downright disparaging and filled with rant after rant winning battles?
